Luther Russell has been making records since 1990, initially as lead singer/songwriter of acclaimed Los Angeles quintet
THE FREEWHEELERS, who made two albums for DGC and American, respectively. He then went solo, releasing three very eclectic works, all recorded while living in Portland, Oregon. It was also in the great northwest that Luther began to produce many independent records by artists such as
RICHMOND FONTAINE and
FERNANDO, primarily working out of Jackpot! Studios with engineer Larry Crane, editor of Tape Op magazine. Since relocating back to his hometown of Los Angeles in 2002, he has completed a new solo record entitled "Repair", which was produced by
Ethan Johns (Kings Of Leon, etc.) This eventually led to Luther and Ethan co-producing the debut album of songstress
SARABETH TUCEK, out later this year. The first single from her self-titled record, "Something For You", was released earlier this year in the UK, quickly becoming "Single Of The Week" on Steve Lamacq and appearing regularly on Sean Rowley's Joy Of Music. Luther has helmed many rock en espanol records, including the latest EP by east L.A.'s own
OLLIN, featured on NPR's The World. Most recently he worked at Toerag Studios in East London where he produced the upcoming debut 45 by Manchester, England's own
FOLKS. Being first and foremost a songwriter, Luther has had music featured in shows on NBC, ABC, CBS, Showtime and HBO. As a multi-instrumentalist, he is able to handle drums, bass, guitar and keyboards, respectively. He has learned from and worked along side such studio vets as
John Fischbach,
Jim Scott,
John Hanlon and
Glyn Johns. Luther enjoys cutting artists fairly live and slamming to tape fairly hot. His recent productions include one-off tracks at Toe Rag Studios with
Noah and the Whale, and
Noah Kelly.
